Do you feel afraid? If not right now, then this week, month or at some point this year?
The problem with fear is it stops us in our tracks, preventing us from achieving our goals and producing the results we desire. I know how important it is for you to be successful so I’m here to partner you overcoming any fear you have.
Throughout this Mindset Matters blog series what will best serve you is to think of a specific goal or result you MUST produce this year; so have that in your mind now.
Step 1: Awareness
Before you can overcome fear you need to be clear just how much havoc it’s causing in your life. It’s easy to think those fearful thoughts are real, but they are not. You are not your fears.
Step 2: Identify
Identify EXACTLY what you are afraid of.
For example is it a fear of x?
What specifically does x look like for you in this situation?
Replace x with your situation. For example are you afraid of failure? What does failure look like for you? Loss of income, reputation? Get very, very specific for yourself. How much money? Reputation with whom? This is the place to get it out of the realm of vague, and into being specific. It’s a lot less scary then.
Step 3: WTWTCH
What’s the worst that could happen? If the things you identified in step 2 actually happened, what’s the worst-case scenario? Would you survive? Have you or people you know or know of, overcome that type of situation?
Step 4: Gratitude
When you feel fear, switch it over to what you are grateful for instead. If you are afraid of not getting that business or role, what if you were grateful for the opportunity to share your talents and gifts with as many people as possible until you find the match you are looking for. What if ‘no’ only meant ‘not now’ or ‘not this’?
Step 5: Release control
Many of us want control and predictability even though it’s impossible to get. Where we don’t have control, we experience fear. But is it possible to ever have control? Give up the illusion of control and you’re free.
Step 6: Creativity
If you applied your mind, interviewed people who’ve overcome similar challenges and brainstormed ideas to deal with the specific things you identified in step 2, could you shift those fearful body sensations to excitement and anticipation?
Step 7: Ban the use of negative words
Close the door on disempowering words, ban them! Have those close to you raise the flag if you are using them. Remember fear is often a back door excuse for non-performance.
Step 8: Get help
None of us can see the back of our own heads; that’s where I, as your performance coach, come in. Why not book a discovery session and let’s kick those fears to the curb once and for all.
Your partner in performance,
