As I was beginning to face new and often challenging scenarios, I started to feel a need for some sort of managerial foundation. A sort of toolbox, which I could turn to when needed, pick up from, and solve from.<\/p>\n<p>When entering the PtP course, I was excited to start with what I thought would be a course in Management 101. Boy was I wrong. PtP did not teach me how to be a manager and manage my team. Instead it asked me to turn within, to uncover the leader within myself, and in this way\u00a0<em>lead<\/em>\u00a0my team.<\/p>\n<p>It is only at the end of this course that I can look back and realise that the most important distinction I made for myself during this process was that between being a manager and being a leader. I very quickly needed to grab hold of whatever confidence I had in myself, nurture it, believe in it, grow it, and eventually stand firmly in my values. The PtP course has allowed me to identify these values, to understand that they are specific to me and my leadership style, and that the success of my team will only reveal itself once I believe in the truth of my values.<\/p>\n<p>I believe that since embarking on this journey, my team has benefited from me identifying and harnessing my leadership values. It has also given me the insight to understand the values or qualities that are not represented in my leadership style. I realised, through confidence, honesty and openness to failure, I am vulnerable, but more authentic in my approach and leadership. This resonates with the team and I believe, somehow comforts them to allow me to lead.<\/p>\n<p>I am more organised, level-headed, calm and mature in my thinking and as a developing leader.<\/p>\n<p>I feel that as a leader, my communication has to be clear and direct, more timeous considering the team\u2019s efficiency and respecting their time.<\/p>\n<p>The process and program changed my perspective on value, how to be valued and being valuable to the team and business. It enabled me to learn, grow and develop, and challenge myself to continue and be more confident in my role.\u00a0 I now think and approach leadership differently. Not just in my work life but also in my home life. I am sleeping better, exercising regularly, eating healthily, taking more time for my partner and for the things that matter to him. I&#8217;m happier at home and more productive at work, and for the first time in a very long time I feel like work is sustainable &#8211; for me and the work place. &#8220;Work smart, not hard&#8221; is something I am beginning to appreciate as a practice, not just a corporate idiom. I&#8217;ve never had a problem with &#8220;leaning in&#8221;: my lesson was to conserve my energy until it really mattered, not expend it on unimportant tasks. I also find I have more patience with myself where I don&#8217;t get teamwork right, or relationships get rocky (as they are wont to do periodically when people work together every day). I&#8217;m learning to differentiate between when I need to be soft, and when I need to be hard, learning that just because someone is highly emotional, doesn&#8217;t mean they are right. When someone is upset I am learning to disarm my own emotional response so I don&#8217;t get caught up in the fray. Critical work lessons. I wanted to do everything that I could possibly do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As the business has grown, and through the skills learned in Performance through People in 2014, I\u2019m now more focused on my growth and career opportunities within the company than my concerns that I\u2019m not the one doing everything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I still work in the Admin Department, and even though I\u2019m no longer in a management position, I have my main focus on developing myself so that I can work in the short-term personal insurance department.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition, I now make time for myself; I\u2019ve started doing Triathlons and these events make me happy and alive. She says about the programme \u201cI now have the confidence to spot possible breakdowns early on and to mitigate potential challenges upfront. Communication is definitely better, I focus on acknowledgement of the team, before giving feedback and guidance on how to best meet ZARA\u2019s exacting standards; even when we have curved balls coming at us. With this last project I felt totally relaxed, being based in Cape Town and the team up in Gauteng. I went up once a week and for the last 4 days before handover.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So I\u2019ve been leading a remote team, but with insight into what to put in place to ensure they are taken care of and I am confident that agreed actions are happening. These shifts apply equally to both the workplace and to more personal aspects of life. It is testimony to her understanding of human nature that she does not attempt to isolate the two spheres, but rather draws on the aspect of authentic self that will serve both the business and the personal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Deeply insightful, Mandy seems to intuitively know when to push for progress, or hold back to give time for self-reflection &#8211; and in the process gives the reins over to the person being coached.
